The evacuations will be carried out in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal. The government has set up relief camps in the affected areas and is providing food, water, and medical supplies to those who have been evacuated.
Cyclone Biparjoy is the second cyclone to hit India in the past two months. Cyclone Asani made landfall in Andhra Pradesh in May, killing at least 12 people and displacing hundreds of thousands.
The Indian Meteorological Department has warned that Cyclone Biparjoy could be a “very severe cyclonic storm” and has urged people in the affected areas to take precautions.
The government has also deployed the Indian Navy and Air Force to assist with the relief efforts.
The cyclone is expected to weaken as it moves inland, but it is still likely to cause widespread damage.
