India’s first plastic-free railway station was inaugurated in Tirupati on January 21, 2023. The station has been completely rid of single-use plastic items.

The project was undertaken by the Southern Railway in collaboration with the Tirupati Urban Development Authority (TUDA). As part of the project, all single-use plastic items, such as plastic bags, bottles, and straws, have been banned from the station.
The station has also been equipped with recycling bins and water coolers that dispense water in reusable bottles. In addition, the station has installed signage that encourages passengers to avoid using single-use plastic items.
