Kalam was born in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, in 1931. He studied physics and aerospace engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Kalam died on July 27, 2015, at the age of 83. He was a national icon and his death was mourned by millions of people across India.
