Tirupati Laddu Row Takes a Back Seat as Supreme Court Steps In
The ongoing investigation into the alleged use of adulterated ghee in the preparation of laddus at Tirupati’s Lord Venkateswara temple has been put on hold. The Supreme Court, which heard a batch of petitions on the matter on October 3, will likely provide further directions for the probe.
No Evidence of Adulteration Found, SC Says
During the hearing, the Supreme Court questioned the basis of the claims made by the Andhra Pradesh government. The court noted that there was no evidence to suggest that adulterated ghee had been used in the preparation of the laddus and sought clarification from the state on whether tests had been conducted.
Supreme Court Raises Concerns Over Ghee Claims
The court also expressed concern over the government’s handling of the issue, particularly the lack of due diligence before making public such sensitive allegations. The court remarked that such pronouncements could potentially hurt the religious sentiments of millions of devotees who hold the offerings at the temple in high regard.
SIT Awaits Supreme Court Directives
In light of the Supreme Court’s observations, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted to investigate the matter has temporarily suspended its activities. The SIT will await further instructions from the court before taking any further steps.
