It seems that Andrej Karpathy has left OpenAI, a departure confirmed by a spokesperson. Before leaving, he worked on an AI assistant and collaborated closely with OpenAI’s research chief, Bob McGrew. Karpathy is well-known for his contributions to OpenAI and his role at Tesla, where he led Autopilot efforts. His departure from Tesla in July 2022, after about five years of service, was a significant loss for the company, given his contributions to autonomous driving technology. Before Tesla, Karpathy was a founding member of OpenAI and a respected AI researcher.
After leaving Tesla, Karpathy briefly created educational content on artificial neural networks on YouTube before rejoining OpenAI in February 2023. His career highlights include contributions to deep learning and computer vision, with a Ph.D. from Stanford University. He was recognized as one of MIT Technology Review’s Innovators Under 35 in 2020.
The implications of Karpathy’s departure from OpenAI remain unclear. His exit coincides with notable changes within OpenAI, including the unexpected removal of Sam Altman, the company’s co-founder, in November 2023. Karpathy, along with other OpenAI employees, expressed support for Altman and confusion over the board’s actions during this tumultuous period.
