Oommen Chandy, the former chief minister of Kerala, died on Tuesday at the age of 79. He had been suffering from liver cancer.

Chandy was born in 1943 in the Kottayam district of Kerala. He joined the Congress Party in 1964 and served as chief minister of Kerala from 2001 to 2006 and again from 2011 to 2016.
He was also the leader of the opposition in the Kerala assembly from 2006 to 2011.
Chandy was a popular figure in Kerala and was known for his clean image and his commitment to secularism. He was also a successful businessman and had a keen interest in sports.
He is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter.
A state funeral will be held for Chandy on Wednesday.
