People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti cancelled her election campaign on Sunday as a gesture of solidarity with the people of Lebanon following the reported death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir wrote: “Cancelling my campaign tomorrow in solidarity with the martyrs of Lebanon and Gaza especially Hassan Nasarullah. We stand with the people of Palestine and Lebanon in this hour of immense grief and exemplary resistance.”

The Reported Killing of Hassan Nasrallah

Reports indicate that Hassan Nasrallah, the secretary-general of Hezbollah, and his daughter Zainab were killed on Friday in Israeli strikes on the Dahiyeh suburb of Beirut. The attack, aimed at Nasrallah, resulted in at least six other deaths.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) stated on X: “Hassan Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorize the world.” The IDF claimed the strike targeted Hezbollah operatives coordinating attacks against Israel. Other Hezbollah operatives were also reportedly killed in the attacks, which continued into Saturday.

Protests in Jammu and Kashmir

Protests erupted in Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam and Srinagar on Saturday, with large numbers of people taking to the streets carrying pictures of Hassan Nasrallah to demonstrate against his reported killing.

Reactions and Calls for Action

Maulana Yasoob Abbas, general secretary of the All India Shia Personal Law Board (AISPLB), paid tribute to Nasrallah, calling his death “a great loss for the Muslim world”. He called for three days of mourning within India’s Shia community and urged the United Nations to intervene to stop the violence in Palestine and Lebanon.
