National Conference Secures Majority in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly

Four Independent MLAs Extend Support to NC

The National Conference (NC) has crossed the majority mark in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly with the support of four Independent MLAs. This brings the party’s strength to 46, making it the single-largest party in the assembly.

NC leader Omar Abdullah announced that four out of seven Independent MLAs have joined hands with the NC, providing the party with a comfortable majority.

NC-Congress Coalition in the Making

With its alliance partners Congress and CPI(M) winning six and one seat respectively, the NC-led coalition government is expected to take shape soon. Talks are currently ongoing between the NC and Congress, with the latter having been given time to decide on their support.

Omar Abdullah was unanimously elected as the leader of the NC legislature party, paving the way for him to stake claim to form the government. He expressed gratitude to the NC legislators for their support.

PDP Raises Concerns, Independent MLA Remains Unattached

The PDP has raised concerns about alleged hooliganism by NC workers after the election results. Meanwhile, Independent MLA Chowdhury Mohd Akaram has declared that he will not join the BJP, despite receiving multiple offers from different parties.

Restoring Article 370 and Statehood Takes Center Stage

The NC has vowed to prioritize the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. However, NC leader Farooq Abdullah acknowledged that it will take time to restore Article 370 due to legal complexities.

The NC-Congress government aims to reduce regional differences and build trust among the Hindu community. Additionally, Omar Abdullah warned the center against its attempt to appoint nominated MLAs, stating that such an action would be challenged in the Supreme Court.

  • The BJP won 29 seats, while PDP, People’s Conference, and AAP secured 3, 1, and 1 seats respectively in the 90-seat Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections.
  • Independent candidates won a total of 7 seats.
